SOS Testimonials

Aloha,

The whole experience was fantastic. I had so much fun snorkeling and seeing so many amazing creatures (especially the sea turtles) and really enjoyed seeing the pictures online.

I posted a blog in which I mentioned Save Our Seas. Here’s the link: http://windowseat.travelocity.com/2008/09/giving_back_to_hawaii.html

Hope all is well with you in the beautiful state of Hawaii.

Best regards,

Hi Terry,

Beautiful movie. I like the way you had the theme of the artist and integrated the actual fish. Here's that ppt I told you about.

Dear Captain Clark:
I am a strong supporter of local programs that teach our keiki the importance of protecting and maintaining our ocean and its resources.  By attracting their attention at a young age, we can hope that they will grow into future marine biologists or go into other fields that promote the well-being of our ocean.

I also want to extend my aloha and congratulations to the success of The Tropic Bird educating students from Kapa'a on the importance of being drug-free.

To whom it may concern,

Our son was active in the SOS program during his entire six years at Kula High & Intermediate.  This program gave him so much valuable life experience that it is hard to measure in ordinary terms.

He learned conservation, laboratory survey work, community service experience, teamwork, understanding of marine ecosystems, stewardship, snorkeling skills, and other skills that we probably are not even aware of.

The leadership of Paul Clark in this program and in the marine science classes at Kula has been phenomenal.

Our son is now at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and I know he has benefited greatly from the learning skills he obtained via SOS and Capt. Paul Clark.

Aloha, I commend you on your professionalism and all the hard work you do for the kids in your class.

Thanks Again, Carla - Kindergarten Teacher

Kirstie Daly Grade 11 - Growing up in Hawaii, I’ve always known that the ocean was a beautiful, special, sacred place. Being part Hawaiian, the ocean has always been a way for me to link my past to my future and to relate to my ancestors and my amakua.

This year, in this very marine biology class, I got to learn more about the great mass of water and emotion that surrounds our islands. I got to better understand the many creatures and coral life that make the oceans here in Hawaii so unique and worth fighting for. I think that if I learned anything it would be that the ocean and reefs in Hawaii need to be cherished and never taken for granted. This class has changed the way I viewed the ocean because we got to actually go out and see its majesty.

Thank you for a good year Captain Paul.

Aloha,

We are all so blessed to have teachers like Capt. Paul and I just want you to know that he is greatly appreciated for every big and little thing he does in supporting our kids.  Capt. Paul was amazing in the energy he devoted to the kids during the entire trip.  He makes learning so fun that the kids are completely engaged, absorbing information and having a memorable time doing it.  He also has a wonderful rapport with the students and is a fabulous role model for the boys.

With sincere appreciation, Michelle Harrington

Our family appreciates you Captain Paul for the way you teach our son and his classmates! He admires you and has learned so many valuable things about our world and ocean and environment. You are inspiring to many! Aloha, The Daniells Family

Our son loved having you as a teacher and is very inspired by all that he learned in Science class.  He loves the ocean and you brought an awareness and educated him in many ways, which he will continue to talk and think  positively about living on our beautiful island! ( And is also sharing with my husband and I, so thank you for educating us too!)

Aloha, Doreen

From Lisa Mireles, Principal Kula Elementary

This week I was completely amazed as I observed Captain Paul in action with the first and second grade students and parents at Anini Beach. Paul is the perfect example of a self-fulfilled educator who has aligned his passions with true purpose. His passion for protecting the ocean, his energy and his expertise are completely contagious. The children emerged from the water bursting with news of what they had seen in the ocean. A first grader couldn’t wait to tell me what he had seen and he even used the scientific names! One parent shared with me that she had lived on the island for 20 years and had never snorkeled at Anini. She left me with the impression that she had made a personal commitment to snorkel more often. The field trip was pretty magical and in the end I realized that Paul is so impressive because he uses his gifts to inspire others to take care of a precious global resource. He is making a true difference to so many of us and we are very grateful for what he brings to Kula. Paul is a terrific example of how those who are self-fulfilled are better able to benefit society.

As the district aquatic biologist with the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources, Dept. of Land & Natural Resources, I want you to know that I have been working with Captain Paul Clark, Save Our Seas president, for a number of years and strongly support his efforts towards improved conservation for our unique marine resources.

Paul does fine work and is actively involved in community outreach education programs. I fully support the creation of "Marine Protected Areas" (MPAs) on Kauai and want you to know that the broad community, including the Hawaiian community,  also supports it. The traditional Hawaiian practice of holistic watershed resource management was called the "Ahupua'a", and the ahupua'a included MPAs that were called "kapu" areas.

Only by re-adopting these traditional marine conservation tenure systems (i.e., ahupua'a or watershed councils and their respective kapu areas) can we conserve and restore our nearshore fishery resources and enhance native Hawaiian cultural practices and well-being.

Sincere Aloha,

Don Heacock - Division of Aquatic Resources, Dept. Of Land & Natural Resources
