Aloha,

March, 1995

SOS wishes to share with you an update from Kauai, Hawaii. Our mission is to end all pollution of our planet's oceans through cooperative international recycling activities and the elimination of toxic waste dumping. SOS advocates immediate proactive solutions. We intend to involve our youth in this project, and promote educational resources in all these areas.

SOS successfully coordinated a pilot project with the cooperation of the Transpacific Yacht Race Committee in the 1993 race from Los Angeles to Honolulu. Racers kept a daily log of pollution sightings, recording contamination, and collected their own refuse as they sailed. The winner of the race, ÒSilver Bullet,Ó also won the recycling trophy. This project serves as a global role model which demonstrates how individuals and collective efforts by those who are concerned about the health of our oceans can be part of the solution.

SOS is sponsoring the INTERNATIONAL CLEAN OCEAN CONFERENCE in Hawaii in 1996. We feel that Hawaii is an ideal location for the conference because of its geographical location. Situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, many developing economic countries and political entities are our neighbors. The Pacific Rim countries, including the United States, must work together now to keep our oceans clean.

The seas provide many of our foods and are a major recreational resource. Pollution creates contaminated food sources and adversely affects recreational activities. Microscopic creatures in the ocean generate much of the oxygen that we breathe here on Planet Earth. Pollution is killing these microscopic creatures as it harmfully modifies their environment.

It is urgent that we all work together to keep our ocean safe from pollution and contamination. The International Clean Oceans Conference will get people together to communicate; to discuss how we can create a better future for the planet, for our seas and for ourselves. If you have any suggestions concerning the conference and about whom you would recommend for speakers, please let us know.

You can help by joining SAVE OUR SEAS today! There are many other ways you can help as well. Other plans include participation in Earth Day 1995 - April 22 - and in the Kai Kauai Ocean Festival this Fall. Let us know your ideas. You may have events that are planned for you community in which there would be opportunities for SOS to have a display of information.
