SOS Newsletter, February-March 1996
Aloha friends,
The kids started studying the reefs on February 8, 1996 at Anini and Kapaa. Ocean Pulse has gone to the next level in grand style with the help of many people, especially Don Heacock of Hawaii DLNR, and Karen Chandler of Moondance Hawaii. The project will be doing coral reef studies until 1997. Our goal is to establish a model "Adopt a Reef" example and form a group of concerned reef keepers to gather baseline reef information. The vision is to establish baseline information and to get communities involved in their reefs. Once these groups of "reef keepers" are established, a bridge will be built between people who a concerned about specific reefs and the scientific community. The Internet will be used to connect these "reef keepers" around the world.
The seas provide many of our foods and are a major recreational resource. Pollution creates contaminated food sources and adversely affects recreational activities. Microscopic creatures in the ocean generate much of the oxygen that we breathe here on Planet Earth (70%). Pollution is killing these microscopic creatures as it harmfully modifies their environment.
Please make plans to come and support Save Our Seas, and tell all your friends. It is urgent that we all work together to keep our oceans safe from pollution and contamination. CLEAN OCEANS '96 will get people together to communicate: to discuss how we can create a better future for the planet, for our seas and for ourselves. Contact Teresa Tico for more information.
We feel that Hawaii is an ideal location for the conference because of its geographical location. Situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, many developing economic countries are our neighbors. The Pacific Rim countries, including the United States, must work together now to keep our oceans clean.
You can help by either joining Save Our Seas today, or renewing your membership for 1996. Thank you.
