SOS is an international Hawai'i based non-profit organization
that utilizes education and research to preserve, protect,
and restore the world’s oceans for future generations.

Aloha Friends, members and residents of our Ocean planet,

2004 was quite an eventful year for SOS.  Ocean Pulse continued on the island for the 4th successful year.  The Kaisei and Spike Africa complemented the Ocean pulse @ Sea, SOS's  sail training/marine research program.

Save Our Seas Marine Creature of the Month

Class Cephalopoda

Octopus spp. – octopus, Hawaiian: He’e, Japanese: Tako

Description: 8-arms lined with suckers; mottled-brown and black, often with white spots

Size: up to 1 m length

Habitat: in holes and cracks on the reef; out in the open at night

Cultural:  Early Hawaiians captured octopus by either by spearing or by using lures made of a large cowry shell lashed onto a hook.  These skilled anglers attracted the octopus with the movements of the lure.
