Save Our Seas Clean Oceans Conferences and Festivals 1995-2007

1st Oceans Day June 10, 1995 Oceans Day was first declared at the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in l992. Its objectives were to raise public awareness about the importance of the planet's oceans in our lives: educate students, citizens and key decision makers about managing human activities related to the oceans, and how each person can make a difference; promote oceans "caretaker" activities, including projects, research and cultural and educational events; strengthen existing ocean networks, databases and information exchange; promote law and policy development through oceans education. The United Nations, Kauai's Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, as well as the mayor's of all the Hawaiian Islands, and Hawaii's Governor, Ben Cayetano, have issued proclamations declaring the second Saturday in June is Hawai’i Oceans Day.

Save Our Seas (SOS) celebrated "Oceans Day" for the first time in the United States, on Saturday, June 10, 1995. The organization held a forum entitled SUSTAINABILITY OF UNIQUE MARINE RESOURCES at Anini Reef on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii's third largest reef after Molokai and Kaneohe Bay. The purpose of the forum was to educate the community about ways that Hawaii's reef can be improved and maintained in a healthy environment.

Keynote speaker James E. T. Maragos, Ph.D., Senior Fellow, Program on Environment, East West Center, and President of CORIAL, personally walked the reef and pointed out corals and other sea life. Maragos did an extensive reef study on Kauai in 1981. He is extremely knowledgeable about the local reefs of Kauai and their history of changes from 1981 to the present.

School-age children and interested people from the community were invited to meet at Anini Park Pavilion for reef education and a discussion about coral reefs as a valued resource for the future. The emphasis was on understanding ecosystems and the means for increasing their sustainability for following generations. Dr. Maragos and others discussed the Anini coral reef and how community members are able to make a difference in the sustainability of our reefs. Following are the subjects covered: comparison of Anini reef today and its condition 15 years ago; causes that have affected this reef's status; and ways that community members and visitor's can help improve the present condition of Anini reef.

Clean Ocean Fest 2004

Saturday July 31st, 2004  10 am  -  4 pm “Pinetrees” Hanalei Bay, Kaua’i

Princeville Resort Saturday Night:  Kaua’i Marine Resource Protection Meeting Award Winning Movie Premiere “Coral Reef Adventure”; Voyage of the Kaisei to Ni’ihau

Saturday evening at the Princeville Resort, a group of local scientists and educators spoke about Kaua’i marine resource protection.  The speakers included: Sue and Dave Boynton, Representative Mina Morita, Dr. Carlos Andrade, Dr. Carl Berg, Don Heacock, Dr. Austin Bowden-Kerby and Dave Raney. The amazing IMAX movie “Coral Reef Adventure” followed the speakers.

Sunday August 1st, Kaisei, a 151ft. Brigantine tall ship, set sail for the island of Ni’ihau with some lucky local students during SOS Ocean Pulse @ Sea.  These students learned how to sail a brigantine tall ship, ocean stewardship, and coral reef monitoring. Kaisei anchored off the North shore of Ni’ihau that evening and the crew was treated to a spectacular moonrise over the cliffs.  The boat weighed anchor the next morning to run into the beginning of the tropical storm that blasted the island last Wednesday.  Though the trip was slow returning, Kaisei and its professional crew arrived safely back in Hanalei late the next day.  A percent of Kaisei’s fuel was BioDiesel, or recycled vegetable oil donated by Pacific BioDiesel of Maui.  Save Our Seas incorporates alternative energy sources as part of a conscious effort to decrease the world’s reliance on petro-chemicals.
